‘Avengers: Age Of Ultron’: Joss Whedon Talks Quicksilver’s Speed, Scarlet Witch’s Power
Joss Whedon recently sat down for an interview with Marvel. Com where he talked about the new characters in the “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” specifically about the Maximoff twins Scarlett Witch and Quicksilver. The director explained his reasons for adding the characters to the sequel and also talked about the process of shooting Quicksilver’s speed for the film.
When asked by Marvel.com host Lorraine Cink on why he decided to add Scarlett Witch and Quicksilver as characters in “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” Joss Whedon explained that aside from the twins being a member of the Avengers, he figured it was important for the sequel to have a change in game. So he cast Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch) and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, (Quicksilver), people whom he said “would change the game, emotionally and stylistically.”
Joss Whedon especially talked about Scarlett Witch and Quicksilver’s powers, which he described to be “completely different” from the existing Avengers including Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Hulk, Thor and Hawkeye. “Through them, we get to see things differently,” he added.
According to IGN, the director also talked about how production on “Avengers: Age of Ultron” managed to shoot Quicksilver’s scenes, especially on his speed. "When we're at speed with him, we're going fast, we're going slow; it's not like we're trying to do some enormous slow-guy set piece, it's just something we never had license to do in the first movie,” he explained. Whedon said he wanted Quicksilver’s scenes to not be so “stylistically arched” that viewers get lost in it. Instead, he said he wanted for Quicksilver’s powers to be depicted somewhat poetically and strange.
“Avengers: Age of Ultron” will reportedly be the origin story for Scarlett Witch and Quicksilver. Elizabeth Olsen, in an interview with Empire Magazine, claimed the sequel will show how both characters are still trying to learn more about their powers. In the movie, Wanda Maximoff has yet to fully explore her telekinetic powers. Olsen revealed Scarlet Witch also has visions and the ability to share them.
Both Quicksilver and Scarlett Witch are sure to bring “Avengers: Age of Ultron” the much needed game change Joss Whedon wanted, since the characters’ loyalties will be explored in the sequel. Whether the twins will side with the heroes or with Ultron and his army remains unknown.
