Father's Day is over, but children who failed to give their dads a present on Sunday could still catch up. One gift they could consider, if papa happens to be a techie is Barnes & Noble's Nook tablets which are being sold at reduced prices as an extension of the retailer's Father's Day sale.

Under the limited time offer with no specific end date, the price of the 7-inch Nook HD which used to be $199 was slashed to $129, while the price tag for the 9-inch Nook HD+ was reduced to $149 from $269.

The old prices are the price tag for Amazon's 7-inch Kindle Fire HD and 8.9-inch model, although Amazon has a $159 basic model Kindle Fire which is still more expensive by $10 than the most expensive Barnes & Noble Nook tablet.

Although the Kindle Fire 8.9-inch model has a camera, which the Nook HD+ lacks, experts say the Nooks are better buys in terms of other technical specs.

The cut price which hardly leaves Barnes & Noble a profit margin is believed to be linked to industry buzz that the company could pull back of hardware in favour of selling content for other companies' devices and exiting the tablet market.

However, others speculate that Barnes & Noble could be clearing its inventory to give space to a new model.

The Nook tablets support Barnes & Noble's ecosystem and its newly updated system support Google's Play Store.
