George Clooney Considers Selling His Lake Como Estate In Italy
George Clooney is considering selling his beautiful Lake Como home amid concerns over the paparazzi constantly photographing him and his wife Amal Clooney there. The Hollywood superstar is reportedly considering an offer of $100 million for the 18-century Villa Oleandra, according to Page Six. The actor bought the villa from the Heinz family in 2002, reportedly for around $10 million.
The star is hugely popular in the northern Italy area. “He’s like the mayor of the lake,” a source said. He added that the actor is troubled by the attention he gets when he’s at the shuttered mansion in Laglio. Photographers have recently caught George and Amal saying goodbye to Robert De Niro after he and wife Grace Hightower came over for dinner. Clooney was photographed shirtless as he and Amal caught the sunset with a friend, last week.
George usually spends his spring and summer at the villa, and has hosted a number of famous friends there. “George loves the area and the people who live there, but is conscious of the attention he gets when he is in town,” the source said. He added that the actor has got a huge offer for the property, which he is considering, and he would buy another, less accessible property in another area of Italy.
The 54-year-old actor is hugely popular amongst the residents of Laglio, and Mayor Roberto Pozzi has taken efforts to help ensure his privacy in the town. In April, he issued an ordinance stating that anybody who disturbs the occupants of the main house or the adjacent Villa Margherita, which George also owns, or found in the grounds without permission, would be fined up to $550. Though, Clooney loves the people and his estate, it’s not the first time that he has considered giving it up.
In 2007, the actor thought about selling Lake Como after then-mayor Giuseppe Mantero tried to turn a boat dock next to the house into a park “for viewing George Clooney’s place.” Later, he and the residents of the area signed a petition against the plans. Clooney’s representatives declined to comment on the reports.
