NFL News: Indianapolis Colts Cut 3 Players Including LaRon Landry
The Indianapolis Colts have released three players on Wednesday including safety LaRon Landry. The eight-year veteran spent the 2013 and 2014 National Football League, or NFL, seasons with the Colts and suited up for a total of 23 games. Landry is actually signed through until the 2016 season but the team cut him owing to disappointing performances with the team both on the field and off the field.
Landry, who signed a $24 million contract for four years in 2013, missed games due to suspension because of being found guilty for using performance enhancing drugs, or PED in 2014. Other cuts were linebacker Andrew Jackson and offensive lineman Xavier Nixon as reported by ESPN.com.
The Colts were set to pay him $4.75 million in 2015 and $5.75 million in 2016 but with releasing Landry, the team will save about $2.2 million according to the report. Aside from his stint with the Colts the past two years, Landry also played for the Washington Redskins from 2007 to 2011 and the New York Jets in 2012. Landry was the sixth overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft. Landry showed some promise in the NFL and was selected as a Pro Bowler in 2012.
The 30 year old Landry has career numbers of 616 tackles, 8 sacks, 41 pass deflections, 6 interceptions and 10 forced fumbles in his stint in the NFL. Also troubled with issues off the field is Jackson, who had a couple of driving under the influence, or DUI, cases while with the team.
Jackson was Indianapolis’ sixth-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft while Nixon was undrafted in the 2013 NFL Draft. The Colts made the NFL postseason in the 2014-2015 season finishing with an 11-5 record an winning the American Football Conference South division. Indianapolis won over the Cincinnati Bengals, 26-10 in the AFC wildcard match-up and then upset the Denver Broncos, 24-13 in the AFC divisional round game. They lost to the eventual Super Bowl champions, 45-7 in the conference championship.
