NFL News: St. Louis Rams Aim For Restructuring Contract Of QB Sam Bradford
The St. Louis Rams are reportedly looking to restructure the final year of the contract of its quarterback, Sam Bradford. The update is coming from St. Louis Dispatch's Jim Thomas, who discussed the Rams’ financial situation for the next National Football League, or NFL, season.
The 27 year old Bradford was drafted the first overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft coming out of Oklahoma Sooners where he won the Heisman Trophy for the best player in college football. Bradford made waves early in his NFL career setting the record for most completions by a rookie and got him the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award that year.
However, Bradford struggled with injuries in his sophomore year. He had a lower body injury in the 2011 season and it affected Bradford’s performance for much of the year. After a healthy 2012, Bradford struggled with injuries again in the 2013 season with a torn ACL and the 2014 season when he again tore the same ACL.
The Rams have now the option to get out of Bradford’s final year of his rookie contract worth $12.985 million. Owing to his injury history, Bradford may not have much leverage and agree on restructuring his current deal. Bradford has missed 25 of the past 32 games with the Rams the past two NFL seasons.
In his rookie year, Bradford threw for 3,512 passing yards on 354 of 590 completions or 60.0% completion rate with 18 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. In 2012, his third year in the league, Bradford threw for 3,702 passing yards on 328 of 551 completions or 59.5% completion rate with 21 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
The restructuring option on Bradford will come along with the franchise’s decision to re-sign free agents by the team in this offseason including wide receiver Kenny Britt quarterback Shaun Hill, tight end Lance Kendricks and right tackle Joe Barksdale.
