'Orange Is The New Black' Season 3 Update: Creator Says New Season To Focus On 'Faith' And 'Motherhood'
“Orange is the New Black” creator Jenji Kohan has revealed that Season 3 is a “little lighter” compared to Season 2, as they wanted the previous season to get a “little gangster.”
Earlier this year, Kohan revealed that the theme of “Orange is the New Black” Season 3 is going to be “faith.” At the Television Academy screening and panel, Kohan said that the 13-episode new season will focus on “faith” and “motherhood,” a little “lightly” though, according to The Hollywood Reporter. She also said that she likes to pick a theme each season, but that does not mean every episode is going to reflect that theme, as she likes to keep the theme “humming in the background.” Kohan also revealed that the new season will reveal more backstories, as it will take a deeper look into the women’s past.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly (EW), Danielle Brooks explained the new season’s theme. She said that Kohan told her that the new season would explore the broader meaning of “faith.” The women’s stories, from the first season to the third season, have been all about survival, she said, adding “so survival has to be connected to faith.”
“Regardless of if that faith is spiritual or if you’re finding faith in another human being, or even having to reach deep inside yourself to find that faith, all of us are searching for something to believe in and to get through our fights and our struggles in prison,” EW has quoted her as saying.
The motherhood theme may get explored because of Daya giving birth to her child. Also the new season will see the entry of George "Pornstache" Mendez’s mother, played by Mary Steenburgen. The reason behind her introduction is not clear, especially at a time when her son is not going to make an appearance in “Orange is the New Black” Season 3.
All the Season 3 episodes of “Orange is the New Black” will be released on June 12. With Vee dead, things are likely to return to crazy, not deadly, normal at Litchfield prison. Netflix has already renewed this original drama comedy for Season 4.
