The ever-increasing screen size of new devices doesn't just seem to be a trend that device manufacturers are creating. In fact, it may even be a reactionary movement for these companies, as more and more of the market are demanding for bigger screens.

A new research has revealed that the sales of phablets are increasing in demand, as the sales of the said devices are overtaking the PCs and tablets, reports Digital Trends.

"What's changed now is the added pick up of phablets in emerging markets like China and India, not just the plethora of big-name vendors competing head to head with Samsung, but instead the low-cost local players who have swooped in to offer big screens for less money," said Melissa Chua from IDC, charged with the research development, in a statement quoted by Digital Trends.

What brands are tapping the phablet industry today?

Samsung has actually been leading the drive for bigger screens, with the Galaxy Note series and the recently released Galaxy Mega 6.3 under its belt.

But recently, more power players are also jumping the bandwagon of the trend. Nokia's latest release is expected to be the Nokia Lumia 1520, a phablet that will sport a 6-inch display.

BlackBerry is also hyping up its last device slated for release before the year ends. Dubbed as the BlackBerry Z30, the company's phablet has been leaked a number of times. However, unlike most upcoming phablets, BlackBerry opted to limit the screen size to only 5 inches.

Acer is another brand that is getting into the phablet groove. PC Mag reports that the Liquid S2 will also have a 6-inch HD display, with the added capability of 4K video recording.

Apple: Going the phablet way?

Even Apple has been reportedly been rumoured to pursuing the phablet way in smartphones, particularly in trying to rival competitors for the crown of best big-screened device.

While ergonomic and aesthetic design is the very essence of Apple when it comes to creating its iDevices, there is a rise in the need for phablets, as a growing market is looking for devices that can have a big screen without having to be too bulky.

According to USA Today, Reuters has reported that Apple may now be looking into the phablet industry to try and rival its biggest competition, Samsung. This may be due to how the Galaxy Note series is enjoying positive reception and even anticipation with the Galaxy Note 3 looking at a reveal this month.

"Apple is looking at introducing at least two bigger iPhones next year--one with a 4.7-inch screen and one with a 5.7-inch screen," said an unspecified source in a statement quoted by USA Today.

The bigger phones may either come in the form of the redesigned iPhone 6. Otherwise, another possibility is for Apple to create a new line, in the same way that Samsung has the Galaxy S series for its smartphones and the Galaxy Note series for its phablets.
