Display, Exterior and Size

Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini features a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED display, while the Galaxy S5 Active comes with a bigger 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display. The screen resolution and the pixel density of the Galaxy S5 Mini and the Galaxy S5 Active stand at 720 x 1,280 pixels and 326 ppi and 1,080 x 1,920 pixels and 432 ppi respectively.

When it comes to exterior, the Galaxy S5 Mini features the same perforated (dotted) plastic back seen in the Galaxy S5 handset. In addition the handset features a glossy but fake metal band covering the corners of the handsets. In many ways, the phone looks similar to the Galaxy S5. The Galaxy S5 Active, on the other hand, is the rugged version of the 2014 flagship Galaxy S5. The handset comes with sturdy body, bolstered plastic edges and flat rear panel.

The Galaxy S5 Active comes with a thickness of 0.35-inch and it weighs 170 g, whereas the Galaxy S5 Mini is 0.36-inch thick and weighs only 120 g. The heavy weight of the Galaxy S5 Active can be attributed to the ruggedness of the device.

It is worth noting that, both the handsets feature water and dust resistant exteriors. Furthermore, the rugged Galaxy S5 Active is shock resistant as well. Hence this handset is IP67 and MIL-STD-810G certified.

Hardware, Software and Memory

The Galaxy S5 Active is powered by a quad-core Krait 400 (Qualcomm Snapdragon 801) processor, clocked at 2.5 GHz and it comes with 2 GB of RAM. The Galaxy S5 Mini, on the other hand, is powered by a quad-core (Exynos 3) Cortex-A7 processor clocked at 1.4 GHz. Also, the Mini device houses 1.5 GB of RAM. Both the handsets run on Android v4.4.2 KitKat OS with Samsung's TouchWiz UI.

When it comes to memory, both the devices offer 16 GB of internal storage. In addition, both the phones support microSD card for expansion. However, the expansion limits of the Galaxy S5 Mini and the Galaxy S5 Active stand at 64 GB and 128 GB respectively.

Camera and Battery

The Galaxy S5 Mini sports an 8 MP rear-facing camera unit with LED flash, whereas the Galaxy S5 Active sports a whopping 16 MP primary unit with LED flash. In addition, the Galaxy S5 Active and the Galaxy S5 Mini house 2 MP and 2.1 MP front-facing shooters respectively.

Furthermore, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini houses 2100 mAh user-replaceable battery unit, whereas the Galaxy S5 Active houses a relatively better 2800 mAh user-replaceable battery unit.

Connectivity, SIM and Colour

Both the phones support Bluetooth v4.0, Wi-Fi, LTE, microUSB slots and NFC. In addition, the Galaxy S5 Mini comes equipped with infrared port. Both the phones support micro-sim. However, the Galaxy S5 Mini comes as a dual-sim variant as well.

The Galaxy S5 Mini comes in black, white, blue and gold, while the Galaxy S5 Active comes in green, grey and red shades. However, not all colours are widely available.

Misc

1. The Galaxy S5 Mini houses a fingerprint scanner, whereas the Galaxy S5 Active doesn't.

2. Both the phones feature heart rate monitor.

Price

The Galaxy S5 Mini is priced exorbitantly at £389.95 in the UK that roughly translates to AU$705. Moreover, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini will start shipping from Aug. 7 in the UK.

Furthermore, AT&T has confirmed a green version of the Galaxy S5 Active exclusive to the U.S. The device will be priced at US$714.99 that roughly translates to AU$771.49, according to PC Advisor. Nonetheless, the release date and price details pertaining to Australia is not known at this point.
