For those who need remote access to their Windows 8 or 8.1 computers, here is a step-by-step guide to help set things up.

Note: The device must be running Windows 8 Pro or 8.1 Pro to successfully perform the set-up. If unsure, swipe fingers at the right side of the screen > Charms Menu > Settings > PC Info > Windows Edition which will indicate the current version of the device used.

Part 1

  • Swipe fingers at the right side of the screen > Charms Menu > Search > type System > click on the blue PC monitor appears.
  • A window appears > Remote Settings > Remote tab > Remote Desktop > Allow remote connections to this computer > Apply.

Tip: By default, the remote desktop will not function if the computer sleeps or hibernates. Change settings by following the instructions bellow:

  • Swipe fingers at the right side of the screen > Charms Menu > Search > type Power Options > click on the green battery icon.
  • Choose or customise a power plan > choose the current plan of the computer, which is most likely the Balanced Plan if default settings were not changed.
  • Change Plan Settings > Put the computer to sleep > Plugged in > Never.

Part 2

  • Find the IP address for the Remote Desktop app on the device to find the computer.
  • Swipe fingers at the right side of the screen > Charms Menu > Search > type "cmd" and then hit enter > type "ipconfig" in the Command Prompt and then hit enter > under IPv4, the IP address shows up.

Set up the app component of the Remote Desktop.

  • Play Store or App Store > look for Microsoft Desktop app > Install.
  • Open the app > tap on the plus sign at the upper right corner of the app to add a new computer > enter information; under Connection name, type desired device name.

PC name > enter IP address > skip Getaway and go directly to Credentials > enter Microsoft account.
