The pixel density war is apparently getting bigger with every new smartphone release. To top it off, Sharp has recently announced the first 4K mobile display panel. The well-known Japanese manufacturer has reportedly introduced a brand new 5.5-inch 4K display panel for smartphones. This display combination translates to a never-before-heard pixel density of 806 ppi, notes Tech Blog.

According to NDTV, the Ultra-HD Sharp IGZO 4K display packaged with 2,160 x 3,840 pixels screen resolution is reportedly heading for mass production targeting 2016. Notably, this particular display technology will apparently be part of the smartphones manufactured by Chinese OEMs. At present, there are many smartphones in the market that feature QHD or 2K screen resolution of 1,440 x 2,560 pixels. But then, the next step to revolutionise the ever-growing smartphone screens is apparently the 4K displays.

On the other hand, NDTV notes, Samsung might also begin mass-producing its 5.9-inch Ultra-HD 4K Super AMOLED display in August 2015. This display combination boils down to a pixel density of 700 ppi. Moreover, in November 2014, a report apparently suggested that Samsung is gearing up to manufacture a 5.9-inch UHD display with 2,160 x 3,840 pixels resolution for the Galaxy Note 4 successor i.e. the alleged Galaxy Note 5.

However, by early 2014, the South Koran tech giant’s Semiconductor and Display Technology Roadmap workshop had reportedly suggested that the company has a QHD (Quad-HD or 2K) Super AMOLED mobile display panel bundled with a solid 560 ppi pixel density under development. In addition to the said display panel, the company is also working on a better display panel in the form of UHD (Ultra-HD or 4K) screen of 2,160 x 3,480 pixels resolution. Apparently, the said display details will be part of a sub 5.0-inch display and therefore, the pixel density will turn out to be 860 ppi, NDTV writes.

Meanwhile, reports also suggest that, LG Chemical and LG Display are gearing up to mass-producing all-plastic flexible OLED screens by July. In hindsight, LG’s flexible plastic-OLED (P-OLED) screens, seen in LG G Flex and G Flex 2, have some amount of glass in them. Therefore, it apparently limits the bending radius to a maximum of 75 mm and in the process, it prevents the display panel from shattering, when flexed. But now, LG’s forthcoming all-plastic OLED display panels will reportedly feature a bending radius of 30 mm and hence, the panel would virtually be shatter-proof, notes NDTV.
