Sony has announced the long awaited Android 5.1 Lollipop update for Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z3 series of smartphones and tablets. The owners of the older versions also have reasons to be happy as Sony confirms to roll out the next update for Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1 Compact and Xperia Z Ultra in the coming weeks.

As of now the Android 5.1 Lollipop update is rolling out for the flowing devices:

  • Xperia Z3
  • Xperia Z3 Compact
  • Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact
  • Xperia Z2
  • Xperia Z2 Tablet

According to Tech Crunch, These devices under various carriers will be getting updates in a fragmented manner depending on the time and availability. Thus, users need to have patience and wait for their turn. The owners of the qualifying devices will receive an alert in their notification bar when the update is available to them. Just go to Settings > About Device > Software Update > Check for Updates.

As revealed on Sony’s blog post the latest update would ensure more customisation options. The users will have more notification menu options and have better control on volume, silent modes and notification alerts. A LinkedIn integration resulting in harmonisation of the calendar along with the latest Xperia in Business features for work would be the newest additions. After this update selfie snapping would be much easier with SmartWear integration. Additionally, users can experience faster and accurate auto mode focus as far as the camera improvements are concerned.

Sony is definitely in the spree of updating its devices. The official blog post reveals that after Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1 Compact and Xperia Z Ultra, the owners of which can expect software update in the coming weeks, it would be the turn of Xperia T2 Ultra and Xperia C3. The blog further confirms, “then the original Xperia Z Series… with Xperia M2 and Xperia M2 Aqua after that. ”

After the Android 5.1 Lollipop update, Sony is looking forward for new versions as well. As reported by Neowin, last month Sony made the Android M Developer Preview available for selected 14 Xperia phones and tablets including Xperia Z3, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z Ultra and many more on its Open Device program. The company is also in the process of beta testing its Android software concept build in Sweden to revamp its Xperia UI, reports AndroidGuys.
