An iPhone hacker from Chronic Dev Team found a bug in Apple's iOS 5 that may yield an untethered jailbreak.

Pod2g announced this latest development via Twitter, "Hey jailbreaking friends, I've found a bug that can untether iOS 5. Don't expect a release soon, but I'm gonna work hard in it."

There is no definite description of the bug and how and where it was found. The details are still kept under wraps by the Chronic Dev Team.

It is yet to be confirmed whether the bug also exists in the iOS 5.0.1 beta that Apple gave to developers of the iOS developer program. It is also unclear on which specific Apple devices the upcoming untethered jailbreak will run smoothly.

The iPhone Dev Team and iH8sn0w released Redsn0w and Sn0wbreeze to jailbreak the new iOS 5 and iOS 5.0.1 beta. However, these support tethered jailbreaks.

A semi-tethered jailbreak for iPhone, iPod and iPad installed with Apple's iOS 5 hit the Web in mid-October. BigBoss released a new jailbreak package called SemiTether, which allows iDevice users to jailbreak their gadgets running in iOS 5 without the need to connect to a PC. But this new jailbreak package comes with some limitations.

The limitations of the SemiTether include rebooting to the home screen. Important apps such as mail and Safari will no longer be available. One cannot use Cydia, and it takes longer for the phone to boot.

Last month, International Business Times confirmed that a fake iOS 5 untethered jailbreak went viral on the Web. Some people who revealed step-by-step procedure and how-to instructions on jailbreaking the new iOS 5.

When the iPhone 4S was initially released, it was expected that hackers would get their hands on the new handset. There are groups of hackers that are working on jailbreaking Apple's newest mobile operating system.

Apple released Oct. 12 the free iOS 5 for the iPhone 3GS, the iPhone 4, the iPod touch (third and fourth generations) the iPad and the iPad 2. Massive demand for the software upgrade had some users complaining of Error 3200 interrupting the upgrading process. Many users have been able to get through after dozens of attempts.

With iOS 5 boasting 200 new features, Apple says it is taking "a mobile operating system that was already years ahead of anything else and moving it even further ahead." Among others, the new features for iOS 5 include a revamp on its notification system; integration with iCloud, the new storage service of Apple; a new messaging service for all i-gadgets; and full integration with Twitter.

There is no definite date as to when the untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 will be released. But the Chronic Dev Team is closer in achieving this goal and they will probably release an updated version of greenpois0n, a popular jailbreak tool.
