Boxing News 2015: Oscar De La Hoya Says Lucas Matthysse-Ruslan Provodnikov Fight Almost A Done Deal
Except for a “few loose ends” the Ruslan Provodnikov vs. Lucas Matthysse fight is a done deal according to Golden Boy Promotions chief Oscar De La Hoya. When the remaining issues are resolved, the pair who is campaigning in the super lightweight division will meet potentially at the StubHub Centre in Carson, California, USA on March 28, 2015.
“That fight [Matthysse vs. Provodnikov] is practically done. Now, Provodnikov’s promoter, our partner in the fight, is just looking to tie up a few loose ends. But I can assure you that fight is going to happen,” De La Hoya said in an interview with fighthype.com.
The 31 year old Provodnikov, who is from Beryozovo in Russia, is coming off a a win over Mexican Jose Luis Castillo last Nov. 28, 2014 via a 5th round technical knockout, or TKO, victory. Matthysse, who is from Trelew, Chubut and resides in Junín, Buenos Aires in Argentina, is coming off a victory as well over another Mexican in Roberto Ortiz via a second round KO win last Sept. 6, 2014.
Provodnikov improved to 24-3-0 (17 KOs) win-loss-draw after that win with the most recent loss coming against American Chris Algieri last June 6, 2014 via a 12 round split decision win. Meanwhile, Matthysse is 36-3-0 (34 KOs) after his win over Ortiz. He lost to super lightweight champion Danny Garcia via a 12 round unanimous decision also last September.
The pair is ranked near each other in most boxing organisations’ rankings in the 140-pound division. In the World Boxing Council, Matthysse is ranked 2nd while Provodnikov is ranked 5th. In the World Boxing Organization, Matthysse is ranked 2nd while Provodnikov is ranked 3rd. In the well-respected Ring rankings, Matthysse is ranked first while Provodnikov is ranked fourth.
Golden Boy Promotions, led by De La Hoya is also responsible for making the Canelo Alvarez vs. James Kirkland middlweight fight possibly on May 2, 2015. De La Hoya has stated in recent interview that they are only going to move from the Cinco de Mayo week if the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao fight happens on that date.
