‘Dying Light’ Developer Tools Released With Steam Workshop Integration
On PC, the long-term success of large, complex open world games is often driven in large part by the creativity and inventiveness of fans in the modding community. Three months after the game’s release, the developers at Polish studio Techland have announced that the “Dying Light” developer tools are freely available to all owners of the game.
The announcement comes in the form of a press release issued by Techland and obtained by Gamasutra. The press release states that PC gamers will now be able to take on the role of game designers in the open world of Harran, with the ability to create their own quarantine zones, maps, stories and custom scenarios. Thanks to the power of the Steam Workshop platform, creators will also be able to easily upload and share their masterpieces with the entire Steam community.
A post by Techland on the “Dying Light” Steam Community page indicates that gamers can launch the tools by updating the base game, heading to Steam, clicking on the Library tab and then the Tools menu to begin the download. Techland has also created a six-part series of quick-start video tutorials hosted on the Techland YouTube page. The videos are designed to give budding designers a head start with the modding tools.
As noted by PC Gamer, Techland has been working on the “Dying Light” developer tools for quite a while. The program has been in closed beta for a few months, meaning that the game is likely to already have a hardcore base of fans familiar with the tools. Gamers will likely not be waiting long for the first simple mods to appear.
“Modders were a massive part of our gaming community since ‘Call of Juarez 2’ and ‘Dead Island’ — and we wish to continue that with ‘Dying Light.’ This invitation is only the first stage of our cooperation with the gaming community; after the modding tools are released, we plan to actively support the coolest mods created by players,” said Techland in a statement.
With sales in excess of 3.2M copies, “Dying Light” is by far the most popular game Techland has ever created. The studio has released numerous patches, DLC updates and even a new Hard Mode, which added over 50 weapons, 20 new outfits and more. Techland’s post-launch support shows no signs of slowing down, and the developer has promised even more content is on the way. Following a series of delays, the game was finally released in late January and is available on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
