Samsung Galaxy S5 will have a 2900 mAh battery life and fast-charging technology, which will pump up the juicer to the rim in 2 hours, according to reports.

At present, the Galaxy S5 is probably one of the most anticipated smartphones for 2014. It is expected to pack killer specs and features that will be battery hungry.

The present flagship smartphone of Samsung, the Galaxy S4 has 2600 mAh battery so an upgrade to a 2900 mAh battery means a nice bump to its capacity, unless it has to maintain a higher screen resolution. The Galaxy S5 is expected to have a 2K resolution display panel. If this is true, then we can hardly see any gain in battery life despite the 2900 mAh battery.

Reports claimed the battery of the Galaxy S5 will be a new type of Li-ion battery which can store up to 20 percent more energy in the same footprint. Essentially, despite the bump in capacity, the battery size can stay the same, which can give more room for internals for a more compact smartphone. On top of that, this new battery is reported to be fast charging, alleviating the 2-hour charging time.

This new technology is coming from Stanford research using a silicon anode instead of the usual graphite that allows improvement in its overall capacity.

This battery will be commercialized by Amprius, a Silicon Valley startup, which reported that it can be produced with the current technology. The new technology is already in hundreds of thousands of electronic devices and now shipping to "some smartphone makers."

This new battery technology is a massive news for the mobile computing as Amprius already secured $30 million in funding to produce the next generation batteries, which will store 50% or more energy than the typical Li-ion batteries.

Basically, the Samsung Galaxy S5 having the new battery technology is not a bad deal, especially if it keeps the compact frame of its predecessors.
