Kurt Sutter’s ‘Southpaw’ Features A Buff Jake Gyllenhaal With A Burning Rage [VIDEO]
Penned by “Sons of Anarchy” showrunner Kurt Sutter, Jake Gyllenhaal’s new movie “Southpaw” follows the story of a boxer, played by the”Zodiac” star, who finds success inside the ring but not in his personal life. The movie’s first trailer features an unrecognizable Jake Gyllenhaal who vows to avenge his wife’s death by getting back in shape to fight his ultimate adversary.
Set to hit the big screen on July 31, “Southpaw” was written for Eminem (Marshall Mathers) to play the leading role like a continuation to the rapper’s 2002 acting debut “8 Mile.” Fuelled by the singer’s personal struggle, Sutter wrote “Southpaw” to mirror Eminem’s life which is like brawl that he needs to survive.
Sutter revealed that he’s been taking meeting with the rapper’s producing partners for over seven years as he is interested to collaborate with Mathers. “Southpaw” also refers to the fact the Grammy-winner is a lefty which completely unorthodox in the boxing world, just like a white rapper in the hip-hop world.
“In a way, this is a continuation of the 8 Mile story, but rather than a literal biography, we are doing a metaphorical narrative of the second chapter of his life,” Sutter told Deadline. “He’ll play a world champion boxer who really hits a hard bottom and has to fight to win back his life for his young daughter. At its core, this is a retelling of his struggles over the last five years of his life, using the boxing analogy.”
Instead of starring in the film, Eminem is putting his own mark in the film through his music as the trailer features him chanting in the background. The singer teases fans of his new singer by tweeting the movie’s “world premier” of the promotional trailer.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua (“The Replacement Killers” and “Training Day”), “Southpaw” also stars Rachel McAdams as Maureen Hope, wife of Gyllenhaal’s Billy Hope. “The Butler” star Forest Whitaker will play as Titus “Tick” Willis as Billy’s boxing mentor and Naomi Harris as Angela Rivera.
Other actors in the film include British singer/actress Rita Ora, 50 Cent, Tyrese Gibson, Victor Ortiz, Clare Foley, Beau Knapp and Miguel Gomez as Miguel “Magic” Cantu. Check out “Southpaw’s” trailer here courtesy of EminemMusic.
