Coders Rest In The Office Of Swedish Company Mojang In Stockholm
Coders rest in the Mojang company office in Stockholm January 21, 2013. A pool table, a pinball machine, board games and Lego dot the offices of Mojang, the small Swedish company behind the wildly popular Minecraft video game, and one of its founders is wearing a tuxedo and purple tie on a recent "formal Friday". The atmosphere reflects the independent spirit that has contributed to the raw identity of the game that has just sold 20 million copies. The founders want to keep it that way. Mojang, the Swedish word for gadget, has so far resisted selling to a bigger player or listing on the stock market even though that could mean monster payoffs for the 25-person staff and funding to expand dramatically its games. With the release of "Minecraft PS4 Edition" and "Minecraft Xbox One Edition," and the developer 4J Studios focused on finishing and releasing "Minecraft PS Vita Edition," Minecraft developers Mojang may be in talks about something else to further progress the franchise. According to reports, it may be along the lines of selling "Minecraft" to Microsoft.

While Mojang has not yet made any official announcements, The Wall Street Journal reports that the new information comes from a "person with knowledge of the matter." It notes that the sale could be as high as $2 billion, with the speculations on the deal being sealed as early as sometime this week. "Minecraft" and its developer Mojang have operated as individual entities in the gaming industry for the 13 years that they have been rolling out titles.

In fact, there were previous reports about Mojang's Markus "Notch" Persson's previous dislike of the Facebook-Oculus Rift buyout (though he also stated recently that he has already gotten over it). "Minecraft," as a franchise, has existed as a non-exclusive title and has recently just released two more editions for both Sony and Microsoft.

According to The Wall Street Journal, there could be a way to "reinvigorate" the way "Minecraft" is offered to fans. And its acquisition could be a big event for Microsoft's CEO Satya Nadella.

'Minecraft': Microsoft's Potential Future?

The Verge offers another angle, this time as to how Microsoft's acquisition of "Minecraft" may not seem as ludicrous as it seems. For one, "Minecraft's" following is pretty huge, and the fact that Microsoft could easily require a Microsoft account over at Xbox Live is one reason for it to benefit from the deal. Also, the report touches on the possibility that there may no longer be a lot more left to purchase in the coming years,

given the game's popularity and the fact that there are already millions who have copies of it.

Still, there's also the other side, which is Sony, and how it will have to follow through if the deal happens. The PS4 and PS3 are already lacking a lot of exclusive first-party game offerings, and if "Minecraft" were to end up with their biggest competitor, Sony may be put in a sticky stituation.

Bug Fixes Coming For PS4, Xbox One Editions

Moving away from talks on the "Minecraft" and Microsoft potential deal, Mojang and 4J Studios have not forgotten about the newly released "MInecraft PS4 Edition" and "Minecraft Xbox One Edition." The developers have already provided a few bugs listed for the "Minecraft Xbox One Edition."
