For the most part, it seemed that Sony and Microsoft's next-gen consoles, PS4 and Xbox 720 (Xbox Infinity, if some rumors are to be believed), are just going head to head when it comes to features. That is, you can't expect a lot of difference between the two consoles.

But now, it seems that Microsoft is aiming to integrate this killer feature that, if it works perfectly as envisioned, can actually take gaming to the next level.

ExtremeTech reports that the IllumiRoom augmented reality peripheral projector may be incorporated in the Xbox 720, making it the potentially game-changing experience for gamers.

In a nutshell, the IllumiRoom can project different moods onto the area where it is projected. It can even change the color saturation of your room, distort the image and project it onto your actual room space to give you a feel of it actually happening in real life, or even expand your view so that the game can go outside the borders of your television.

This may be the closest that you can get to an augmented reality gaming experience without the need for a virtual reality headset. On paper, it seems like you'll actually be in the game, as props and effects take place all around you, and not just inside the television.

So far, ExtremeTech adds that Microsoft has so far achieved 11 effects using the IllumiRoom, and there's plenty of room for possibilities. And with the help of the Kinect, which is said to be built-in for the next-gen Xbox, this technology may actually be integrated into the console.

If this is true, and if game developers are able to adapt their games to this kind of technology, then the next-gen Xbox 720 may actually feature next-gen technology, apart from improved graphics. The wait for the May 21 reveal just got a little more frustrating and exciting, didn't it?

Check out the video to see for yourself how the IllumiRoom demo works. Will it be a killer feature that will set the Xbox 720 apart, or are we looking at mere novelty that won't last in the favorite features department?

Watch Dogs confirmed for next-gen consoles

Watch Dogs is finally confirmed as a launch title for the PS4, and given that it will not only release on current-gen consoles Xbox 360, PS3, PC, and Wii U, chances are Microsoft's next-gen console Xbox 720 will also see Watch Dogs as a release title, reports Video Gamer.

You can also look forward to collectible freebies that come with the announced Watch Dogs DLCs, including the Dedsec collector box, a 23cm Aiden Pearce figurine, Aiden Pearce's cap and mask, a soundtrack, and a Vigilante Collector box.

Check out the new gameplay trailer to see where Watch Dogs will take the action when it releases this year on November 19 and 22 for the US and UK respectively.

"We'll have details about what we're showing at E3 later. Stay tuned for updates," said an EA representative to The Examiner.
