PS4, Xbox 720: Next-Gen Updates & A Confirmed May 21 Event for Xbox 720
PlayGo & Strong Line-up Launch for PS4
Gamers may be looking at a May face-off for the next-gen consoles, PS4 and Xbox 720, who are battling it out neck and neck since the official announcements began.
According to Push Square, Microsoft is gearing for its May 21 event, which should end all rumors about features and unsavory requirements for the Durango console. You can expect this event to be an official one, since invitations have already been sent out in the same format as Sony's February announcement.
Those who can't attend or weren't part of the guest list can still catch the full announcement, which will be live streamed via Xbox.com, Xbox Live, and Spike TV for those in the US and Canada, reports Game Informer.
As for Sony, VGLeaks reports that any announcements that will rival Microsoft's May event are still tagged as rumors, with the latest dates still playing between April and May. This is supposedly the final presentation before the E3 come June.
It's understandable for both parties to hold events, considering how Sony still hasn't shown the console and Microsoft has not confirmed most of the rumors that have started to circulate about the Xbox 720.
And with E3 being a mere week before the scheduled event, it would also be a good way to showcase not just the next-gen consoles, but also the games that they will be launching come the (rumored) pre-Christmas release.
PS4's PlayGo: What it is
Perhaps in anticipation of the rumored reveal, Mark Cerny, lead system architect for Sony, drums up the hype for PlayGo, the PS4's feature that allows downloading while playing of new games.
In an interview with VG 24/7, Cerny reveals that, after downloading part of the game, the title will just run in the background, installing copies even as you play.
"So, what we do as the game accesses the Blu-ray disc, is we take any data that was accessed and we put it on the hard drive. And if there is idle time, we go ahead and copy the remaining to the hard drive," said Cerny to VG 24/7, "And what that means is after an hour or two, the game is on the hard drive, and you have access, you have dramatically quicker loading. And you have the ability to do some truly high-speed streaming."
In addition, there is a second custom chip that supposedly lowers the required power for the downloads, so you'll not only save time in waiting to play the game, but also save on the bills-so you can play more without worrying about bill shock. At least, not as much as before.
As for the games, GameSpot reports that Cerny has also announced that the PS4 may be looking at the strongest launch lineup yet. From what has been confirmed, you can expect the likes of Watch Dogs, KillZone: Shadow Falll, DriveClub, Destiny, and Knack, but others are soon to follow suit or be announced, probably at the E3 2013 event. One thing's clear, however: Sony has more confirmations when it comes to the PS4 console, but this can go both ways, partly depending on the Xbox 720 event this May.
